About Almscliff
The quintessential Yorkshire gritstone crag, perched on a high ridge above Wharfedale between Leeds and Harrogate — widely regarded as the cradle of Yorkshire trad climbing. The rock is coarse, exceptionally sound gritstone featuring rounded mantels, crisp crimps, geometric cracks, and friction slabs. Angled toward all compass directions around its summit blocks and buttresses, sun or shelter can always be found, and high exposure ensures immediate drying after rain — probably the most-often-in-condition crag in Yorkshire. Access takes five minutes via established paths from the roadside parking layby. Biting winds on this prominent summit require warm layers in cold weather.
