About Asselstein

A ~60m-high freestanding red sandstone tower near Annweiler am Trifels in the Pfälzerwald — the definitive Südpfalz climbing venue and the most historically important tower in the region. First climbed June 1860, now with around 80 routes ranging from moderate to UIAA 9+. Rock is Lower Bunter Sandstone (Buntsandstein, Trifels beds) — colourful, mostly red, with honeycomb weathering, cracks, slopers and pockets. Local ethics restrict chalk to routes VI and above (excess magnesia closes the pores and glazes the surface), and wet-sandstone rules apply: waiting for the rock to dry protects holds from crumbling. The Asselstein Climbing Hut is a short walk east of the tower.
