Ban-y-Gor is a secluded, heavily wooded limestone sport climbing venue hidden in a quiet side valley of the lower Wye near Chepstow. The rock character consists of steep Carboniferous limestone featuring vertical pocketed faces, athletic overhangs, and sharp crimp edges. Facing west within a deep, tree-lined gorge, the crag stays mostly shaded and is prone to persistent seepage after heavy rainfall, requiring prolonged dry weather to come into condition. The climbing is almost entirely sport-focused, offering sustained bolted routes from 6a up to hard 7th grade testpieces, led by lines like Ban-y-Gor Wall. The approach requires a ten-minute walk along quiet woodland tracks starting from local forest laybys. High ambient humidity and slow-drying rock make it essential to check conditions before visiting.
