Black Rocks is a prominent, dark gritstone crag rising high above Cromford, famed for its serious atmosphere and iconic testpieces. The rock is exceptionally coarse, dark gritstone featuring huge scoops, severe overhangs, and rounded top-outs. Facing northeast, the main crag remains in shade for most of the day, making it slow to dry and cold during winter months. The climbing style is physical, bold, and technically demanding, hosting legendary testpieces alongside classic mid-grade climbs. Masterpieces include the world-famous Gaia, Promontory Wall, and Sandlands. Reach the crag via a five-minute uphill walk from the Black Rocks country park car park. The cold northeast exposure and rounded, unprotectable top-outs represent the main safety considerations.
