About Brin Rock

Brin Rock is a prominent hillside gneiss crag south of Inverness, made up of four buttresses lining the southern side of Creag Dhubh above the B851 through Strathnairn. The rock is compact, hard Moine gneiss similar to that at nearby Ruthven Boulder and Duntelchaig, though often obscured on unclimbed sections by moss and lichen. Facing south, the buttresses are a genuine sun trap and, once the rock has been cleaned, dry quickly in the open hillside breeze — making this one of the driest venues in the Inverness area. A scattering of trad routes dating from the seventies and eighties has been supplemented by a strong crop of steeper sport lines in the Fr6c to Fr7b bracket, with numerous boulders below the crags providing warm-ups. The approach is a straightforward fifteen-to-twenty-minute uphill walk from parking laybys on the B851.
