About Bull's Hollow Rocks

NEVER climb when wet — damages rock. Bull's Hollow is a secluded, atmospheric disused sandstone quarry dating from 1890, tucked into dense woodland on Rusthall Common about a mile west of Tunbridge Wells. The rock character is soft Ardingly sandstone with delicate pockets, smooth friction slabs, and stepped vertical walls averaging around eight metres in height. Over 70 recorded routes include the three-star classics Bramble Corner (VS 4c), The Shield (E1 5c) and The Wall (HVS 5c). Facing predominantly north under a heavy tree canopy, the crag stays cool and shaded, and the boggy quarry floor holds water long after rain — the venue is really only in condition following a prolonged dry spell, so late summer into autumn is prime. The site is a designated SSSI owned by the Tunbridge Wells Commons Conservators; strict soft-rock ethics apply, with top-roping or soloing only and rope guards mandatory. Extra static rope and long slings are useful for setting up off trees and further-back bolts. Roadside parking is available a short walk away near Toad Rocks.
