Causey Quarry is a historical coal-measures sandstone quarry situated in County Durham, adjacent to the famous 18th-century Causey Arch. The rock consists of fine-grained, bedded sandstone that provides clean vertical walls, sharp arêtes, and technical corner cracks. Facing south, the main quarry face receives ample sunlight throughout the day, allowing open sections to dry quickly, though shaded corners beneath trees can hold moisture. The crag offers a modest selection of traditional routes and sport climbs ranging from Severe to E3, catering well to evening sessions and local climbers. Classic routes like Causey Arch Crack offer excellent jam and layback technique on sound stone. Access is straightforward, with a five-minute flat walk from the Causey Arch visitor parking area along well-maintained park footpaths. Visitors should exercise caution on upper ledges where loose soil and quarry debris persist, and avoid climbing immediately following prolonged wet periods to protect the sandstone.
