About Church Door Buttress

Church Door Buttress is the highest and most atmospheric rock on Bidean nam Bian, sitting at around 950 metres on the mountain's north-west shoulder above Coire nam Beith. The buttress is a two-tier maze of tunnels, chockstones, chimneys and a great natural arch — the 'church door' itself — with rhyolite rock giving mostly sound climbing punctuated by sections of loose blocks that demand careful route-finding. Facing north-west at high altitude, the crag receives little direct sun and is one of the slowest-drying summer crags in Glen Coe, holding moisture in gullies and chimneys well after the rest of the glen has dried. Routes are best-known for their winter form, but the summer trad ticks from Severe up to hard E-grades — Crypt Route being the classic — repay a settled dry spell. Approach involves a two-hour steep mountain hike from the Achtriochtan lay-by on the A82, and descent requires cautious mountain navigation from the summit ridge.
