About Cloughton Wyke

Cloughton Wyke is a dramatic coastal venue located north of Scarborough, featuring steep sea cliffs and rocky inlets composed of Jurassic sandstone and shale beds. The rock character varies from solid, pocketed sandstone blocks to fragile, chossy shale tiers, providing adventurous wall climbing and sea-zawn routes. Facing east into the North Sea at sea level, the crag gets morning sunlight but suffers from ocean spray and seepage from the cliffs above, taking time to dry. The climbing is adventurous and traditional, appealing to experienced leaders comfortable with sea cliff environments and variable rock quality, featuring routes like Wyke Wall. The approach requires a fifteen-minute walk from Cloughton village down to the wyke, followed by scrambling across rocky foreshore ledges. Tidal timing is critical; access to the crag foot is completely cut off at high tide, so visits must be timed for low water.
