About La Duchère (Les Contamines)

The biggest cliff on the Chamonix-area list — 170m of gneiss with occasional schist bands, rising directly from the Pontet leisure park at Les Contamines-Montjoie, 25km south-west of Chamonix in a distinctly different valley system. Predominantly slab climbing, with the Drilling sector's overhangs the exception. Five distinct sectors — La Duchère, du Lys (5b–6c), the Amphithéâtre school (3–6a+), Drilling and Fantaisie d'Automne — so parties of any level find something. NW aspect means the sun arrives late in the day (afternoon at the earliest); the wall dries relatively quickly overall but the base retains humidity from the forest floor after rain, so give the shady sectors an extra half-day. 100m walk from the Pontet parking. Different weather system from Chamonix proper — often the "still dry" answer when the Cham valley is fogged in.
