About Delaware Water Gap (Mt Tammany)

The Delaware Water Gap's Mount Tammany cliffs are New Jersey's biggest multi-pitch trad venue — Shawangunk Formation metaquartzite (the same Silurian quartz-rich stratum that becomes conglomerate at the Gunks) capping the Kittatinny Ridge where the Delaware River cuts through. Mountain Project calls Tammany "bigger and more spectacular than Minsi" (the PA-side cliff across the river). The rock is quartz-cemented, well-bedded, and durable, giving predominantly moderate trad routes. Mountain Project's top-ticked classics are The Rib (5.3, two pitches), Triumvirate (5.4, two pitches), Black Wall Route (5.7, three pitches), Double Overhang (5.8, two pitches), and Corkscrew (5.8+) on the Great Arch. Approach is a steep 40-minute hike from the Dunnfield Creek parking lot inside Delaware Water Gap NRA. National Park Service land — free, no permit or fee; a strict ground-up ethic applies (no sport bolting; power drills and new hardware are illegal on federal land) and helmets are required. Peregrine falcon closures at DEWA are on Mount MINSI (PA side, Point of Gap parking lot to Arrow Island) — Mount Tammany itself has NO active peregrine ban. April–June and September–November are prime.
