About Marmolada — South Face

The Queen of the Dolomites — an 800m-tall, 3km-wide south-facing limestone wall below Punta Penia (3343m, the highest point of the Dolomites). The scale is what defines this face: routes are 300-1000m long, most requiring the whole day or a bivy, and route-finding is a real challenge on 200 established lines. Approach starts at Passo Fedaia and traverses to Rifugio Contrin, then up to Ombretta Pass. A ledge cutting across the middle of the face allows a comfortable bivy in a small natural cave, making two-day ascents standard practice. South-facing so drying is relatively fast after rain, but afternoon thunderstorms are a constant summer threat and the wall's height means the top can be in cloud while the base is clear.
