About Tre Cime di Lavaredo (Drei Zinnen) — Cima Grande

Cima Grande (Große Zinne, 2999m) is the middle and highest tower of the Tre Cime di Lavaredo group — known as Drei Zinnen in South Tyrolean German. Its 500m north face is one of the great big walls of the Alps, near-vertical dolomia principale. Emilio Comici's 1933 line up the north face is a foundational route of European climbing. Approach from Rifugio Auronzo (2320m — reachable by the toll road) takes ~1 hour. The critical drying constraint here is seepage: snowfields on the summit and in the couloirs above the wall shed meltwater onto the face well into July, so the classic lines can run damp for weeks after the road opens. Best conditions come after a stable dry spell in mid-summer, and even then afternoon thunderstorms are the norm — always plan to be off the wall by early afternoon.
