About Ferentillo — Il Gabbio

Il Gabbio is the flagship cave sector at Ferentillo, tucked behind the medieval hilltop village in the Valnerina valley. A large limestone cave decorated with pockets and tufas — technical, athletic, mostly harder-grade climbing. The essential attribute for the forecast: the roof depth keeps most of the hard climbing bone dry in heavy rain, so this is a genuine wet-weather refuge for central Italy climbers when the region's other crags are shut down by storms. Historically significant — Ferentillo was the first place anywhere in Italy where a local town council decided to bear the costs of bolting the crag, making it a pilgrimage site for the sport-climbing history buffs.
