About First Flatiron

The First Flatiron is the northernmost of the great tilted Fountain slabs above Boulder — Mountain Project calls the climbing here "longer and more varied than the Third, with huge flakes, dihedrals, and the rollercoaster ridge." Routes range from four to ten pitches on east-facing Fountain arkose. The classic tick list: Direct Route (5.6, ten pitches), North Arete (5.4, five pitches), Fandango (5.5, five pitches), Baker's Way (5.3, six pitches), and Southwest Face (5.2). Same feldspar-cemented Fountain arkose as the Third — hard, fast-drying, high-friction. Same weather cell as the Third Flatiron (all the Flatirons sit on the same east flank of Green Mountain within ~500m of each other). on the standard Flatirons — verify at bouldercolorado.gov/services/osmp-closures before travelling. Approach from Chautauqua or from Bluebell Road; free public access, OSMP land, no fee.
