About French's Dome
French's Dome is a lone andesite crag on the flanks of Mount Hood, 45 minutes east of Portland via Lolo Pass Road in Zigzag. The dome holds around 40 sport routes 80–160 feet tall, well-bolted, with a crimpy, pumpy style — The Beast (5.10b), Physical Graffiti (5.11a), and Kashmir (5.10a) are the classics. Set in old-growth forest with dramatic Mount Hood views, the atmosphere is quiet even on busy Saturdays. Heavy Cascade snowfall makes this strictly a late-spring to early-autumn crag — the road closes in winter and the forest canopy holds humidity into early summer, extending drying times. Best hours are afternoons when the majority of the climbs sit in the shade. Northwest Forest Pass required at the trailhead.
