About Frodsham Crag

Frodsham Crag is a long, prominent outcrop of red Triassic sandstone perched on the hillside above Frodsham, offering a mixture of traditional routes and steep bouldering. The rock quality varies, featuring hard, pocketed sandstone tiers alongside softer, friable bands that require a light touch and careful placement of gear. Facing west, the crag catches afternoon sun and catches the breeze, allowing the upper walls to dry rapidly after rain. The grade range is dominated by lower-to-mid grade traditional climbing and powerful, juggy bouldering problems on roof features. Classics like The Flake demonstrate the delicate wall climbing and pocket pulling that characterize the venue. Approach is via a short, steep walk up through wooded parkland from the hilltop parking areas, taking around ten minutes. As with all Cheshire sandstone venues, the critical rule is never to climb on wet rock, as moisture severely weakens the surface structure and leads to hold breakage.
