  • Good friction range for gritstone
Guisecliff is a long, dark gritstone edge hidden in dense woodland above Pateley Bridge in Nidderdale. The rock consists of mossy, atmospheric gritstone featuring deep fissures, chimney systems, and steep walls. Facing north and north-east under a heavy forest canopy, the crag receives minimal sunlight and suffers from persistent dampness and seepage. The climbing is adventurous, traditional, and often bold, catering primarily to intermediate climbers with routes from Severe to E3. Classic lines like Guisecliff Corner require careful gear placement and sound judgment. Reach the crag via a steep 20-minute uphill hike on forestry tracks from Pateley Bridge. Green moss and slow-drying rock make summer dry spells essential for visiting.
