About Hodge Close Quarry

Hodge Close Quarry is a vast, sheer-walled slate excavation in the Tilberthwaite valley between Langdale and Coniston, worked from the 19th century until the 1960s and now the classic slate climbing venue of the Lake District. The green-grey Coniston slate offers a mixture of quality trad and modern sport routes across east, south and west walls of the pit, mostly concentrated in the Extreme grades though newer sport lines like Bladerunner (7a) have opened lower-grade options. Slate drains quickly but becomes lethally slick when even slightly damp; a genuine dry spell is needed. Access is either by walking down the spoil heap at the southern end or by abseiling in. The quarry has a well-documented history of rockfall and holds a flooded main pit popular with cave divers — take extreme care near unfenced edges.
