About Holwick Scar

Holwick Scar is a dramatic dolerite cliff forming part of the Whin Sill intrusion in Upper Teesdale, offering a wild and atmospheric mountain-crag feel. The rock character is dark, fine-grained igneous dolerite, providing vertical wall climbing, columnar crack systems, and small, crisp edges that require precise footwork. Facing east, the crag catches early morning sunshine but goes into shade by early afternoon, meaning it can feel chilly in cool winds. Drying times are moderate; while open walls dry reasonably in the wind, deep cracks can seep for a day or two after heavy rain. The grade range caters primarily to traditional climbers operating from Very Severe up to low E-grades, with classic lines like Whin Sill Route providing steep, technical climbing on solid stone. Approach involves a fifteen-minute walk from Holwick village along farm tracks and across public rights of way. Climbers should be mindful of loose blocks on upper ledges and respect active farming stock in adjacent fields during the approach.
