About Horseshoe Quarry

Horseshoe Quarry is a massive disused limestone quarry providing a high concentration of sport climbs near Stoney Middleton. The quarried rock walls range from sound, compact gray limestone to blocky, fractured faces in less frequented bays. Featuring a horseshoe shape with walls facing south, east, and west, climbers can easily track the sun or seek shade throughout the day. Lower quarry walls dry quickly in warm weather, though shaded corners and deep fissures hold persistent seepage after prolonged rainfall. The venue offers hundreds of fully bolted routes from 4c up to 8a, with the vast majority falling in the popular 6a to 7a range on vertical walls and subtle technical slabs. Classic testpieces like Trouble at T'Mill and Helicopters draw steady attention. Approach via a two-minute walk from the dedicated countryside park layby near the entrance. Loose rock remains a genuine hazard on upper tiers and uncleaned routes, making helmets essential for both belayers and climbers.
