About Huntley's Cave

Huntley's Cave is a steep, atmospheric schist gorge hidden in woodland near Grantown-on-Spey in the Cairngorms National Park. The rock character consists of steeply overhanging, horizontally banded mica-schist with huge juggy holds, deep pumpy roofs, and damp corner systems. Facing predominantly south into a narrow, sheltered river slot, the upper walls catch sun while lower sections can remain damp and seep long after heavy rainfall. The venue is renowned for steep, physical single-pitch trad testpieces, featuring classic lines like Huntly's Jam and Hanging Groove. The approach is a short five-minute downhill walk from parking off the A939 road. High seepage in spring and lingering dampness in deep grooves are the main conditions to monitor.
