About Kalymnos — Grande Grotta

The single most famous sport-climbing cave in Europe — a huge north-west-facing amphitheatre above Masouri (Armeos) at around 170m, festooned with tufas, stalactites and cauliflower flowstone. Fifteen-minute uphill approach from the Masouri road. The overhang is deep enough that Grande Grotta is effectively rain-proof: it stays climbable through weather that shuts everywhere else down. The NW aspect keeps the wall in shade until early afternoon, when the sun swings around and lights it up. Grades run from 6b into the 8s on some of the most photographed lines in world climbing: DNA (7a+) and Priapos (7c) are the icons, with Aegialis (7c) and Fun de Chichunne (8a) the go-to hard tests. Peak crowds 11:00–15:00 — start early or come after 15:30 for space. Best months: October to April; the cave is one of the few sectors that also holds up in July and August given the aspect and Meltemi breeze.
