About Kilt Rock

Kilt Rock is a world-famous dolerite sea cliff on the Trotternish peninsula of North Skye, noted for its vertical basalt columns resembling tartan pleats. The rock character consists of immaculate, angular columns with laser-cut jam cracks, laybacks, and sustained finger-crack protection. Facing due east into the Minch, the cliff gets early morning sun before falling into shadow, drying steadily in fresh sea breezes. The climbing is strictly for experienced trad climbers, featuring pumpy, vertical single and multi-pitch crack testpieces from HVS up to hard E-grades like Pentalina. Access requires an abseil approach down the cliff face from the public tourist viewpoint parking off the A855. Ocean swell, tidal inundation at the base, and total dependence on abseil ropes are the defining characteristics of this atmospheric venue.
