About Kjerag (Lysefjord)

Kjerag is the 1,132m granite mountain on the southern shore of Lysefjorden in Rogaland — the famous Kjeragbolten (the boulder wedged in the gully) makes it a mass tourist destination, but for climbers this is one of the most serious big-wall trad venues in Europe. The Kjerag massif is around 5 km long with the North Wall rising a full 1,000m out of the fjord waters, and the rock is high-quality Precambrian basement granite. 7+ is regarded as entry level, and the routes are long — expect committing multi-day pushes with limited retreat options. The North Wall aspect means it holds snow late (well into July in poor years) and rarely sees direct sun; friction is excellent but drying is slow. The site forecast reads the fjord-side base (~200m altitude); the summit at 1,132m can be radically colder and wetter. Not a plan-B crag — full commitment required.
