About Leonidio — Twin Caves

Twin Caves is the flagship higher-altitude sector at Leonidio — a pair of imposing tufa-caves side by side at ~518m elevation in the hills south-west of the town. Steep and heavily featured with tufa columns, big blobs and pockets, and the sector is best above 7b — the caves hold most of Leonidio's marquee hard tufa lines, Tufandango (8a+) being the classic prize. The higher altitude means genuinely cooler temperatures on winter still-air days (3-5°C cooler than sea-level Mars on a still, sunny afternoon) and a longer usable shoulder season into late spring. Uses its own weather anchor because the ~270m altitude gap from Mars matters meaningfully in winter and shifts the drying/humidity balance. Approach is a short drive up from town, then 15-20 minutes uphill on foot.
