About Monitor Rock (Independence Pass)

Monitor Rock is Independence Pass's most accessible sport/trad venue — approximately 60 routes on quality Sawatch Range granite about 5 miles from Twin Lakes on the east side of the pass. Predominantly west-facing with excellent afternoon sun. The lower elevation compared to Grotto Walls (3106m vs 2959m altitude — Monitor Rock sits BELOW the pass summit rather than up on the divide) extends the climbing season by roughly a month at each end. Routes span 5.7 trad to moderate 5.12 sport with strong 5.10-5.11 concentration.
