About Muzzerone (Portovenere)

The Muzzerone sea cliffs sit at the extreme tip of Cinque Terre National Park, above Portovenere on the Ligurian coast near La Spezia. 18 separate limestone crags of white/grey solid rock dropping toward the Mediterranean below. West-facing throughout (sheltered from northern winds, exposed to Atlantic-influenced weather systems), altitude 250m at the top. Climbing style ranges from slab and vertical to overhanging, single-pitch sport up to 270m multi-pitch. Approach is either 30 minutes on the panoramic sea paths from Portovenere, or 10-25 minutes from closer access points depending on sector. Developed by the Italian Navy Raiders (Comsubin) in the 1970s for military training before local climbers took over the bolting.
