About Niederthai (Tauferberg)

The Tauferberg — a flat forest ridge west of Niederthai village at 1550m — is one of the best summer bouldering venues in the Austrian Alps. Eleven perfect granite (orthogneiss) blocks are scattered through the trees with an incredible mix of styles: cracks, aretes, part-slab/part-overhang, and hard overhangs. The high altitude and forest cover make it a definitive summer refuge, in the same spirit as Magic Wood across the border in Switzerland. Access via 15 switchbacks up the road from Umhausen in the main Ötztal valley to Niederthai; park at the Lehen car park and walk in. Rock is Ötztal-Stubai crystalline complex — dense orthogneiss, dries fast.
