About Old Man of Storr

Old Man of Storr is a world-famous, towering basalt monolith situated within the Trotternish sanctuary on the Isle of Skye. The rock character consists of weathered, fragile basalt and palagonite tuff, offering bold face climbing on variable, often friable holds. Facing all aspects on its dramatic vertical sides, the pinnacle is exposed to severe weather and seeps after wet periods. Climbing is reserved for experienced traditional teams due to loose rock hazards, with the main classic being the original ascent line on The Old Man. The approach demands a forty-five minute uphill walk along the heavily visited Storr tourist path from the A855 car park. Loose, friable rock and extreme public visibility make helmet use and careful gear testing vital.
