About Pigeon Rock

Pigeon Rock Mountain offers high-quality granite slab and wall climbing set above the Shimna Valley in the heart of the Mourne Mountains. The rock surface consists of coarse, crystalline Mourne granite offering excellent natural friction, crisp quartz edges, and delicate balance slabs. Facing predominantly south at a high mountain altitude, the crag catches full sunshine throughout the day and dries relatively fast in open mountain breezes, though deep fissures retain seepage after prolonged downpours. The climbing style focuses on delicate friction slabs and precise jamming cracks, providing an excellent collection of traditional routes from Severe to mid-tier E-grades, led by Pigeon Crack. The approach requires a scenic thirty-minute walk through mountain terrain starting from the Spelga Dam car park. Sudden weather shifts are common at this elevation, making windproof gear and navigation tools mandatory.
