About Ragged Mountain

Ragged Mountain is Connecticut's premier trad crag — a Talcott Basalt ("traprock") cliff on the Metacomet Ridge above Southington, halfway between Hartford and New Haven. Unusually for a Metacomet cliff, Ragged's main climbing face is south-facing (most Metacomet crags face west), giving quick drying and a long April–November season. The state's classic tick list lives here: Mountain Project's top-ranked are Wiessner Slab (5.3), Broadway (5.8), Yale Crack (5.8 — a popular splitter trad crack), Vector (5.8+), Unconquerable Crack (5.9+), and Sublime (5.11a). There's a "Wet Wall" sector that stays damp longer, but the bulk of the cliff dries well. The Ragged Mountain Foundation manages access on protected land; approach via Timberlin Park (Kensington/Berlin) with recommended parking there (Sheldon Road is limited). Some trails cross private land with posted signs — stick to RMF-approved approaches. Free day-use, no permit. No active peregrine ban at Ragged in 2026 (nearby Hanging Mountain has one) but check CT DEEP each spring.
