About Ralph Stover (High Rocks)
Ralph Stover State Park (High Rocks) is south-eastern Pennsylvania's main trad and top-rope crag — a 200-foot south-facing Lockatong Formation red argillite wall (with friable Brunswick shale beds) above Tohickon Creek in Bucks County, an hour north of Philadelphia. Argillite is an indurated shale — porous and slow-drying, but the gorge setting shelters the crag from wind and its south aspect makes it "a fine winter destination on a sunny day" per Mountain Project. Top-ranked routes span the friendly grade range: Ivy Leaf (5.4), Open Face Slab (5.7), Triple Overhang (5.8), Dirty Sanchez (5.9+, two pitches), and Phone Booth (5.10a/b). Airy Route (5.3), Dead Tree (5.5), Hawk's Nest (5.6), Tango (5.8), and Neanderthal (5.8+) round out the historic tick list. PA DCNR land; no permits or registration required, but "climbing safety equipment is required" and placing new fixed hardware needs park approval. Park only in the Tory Road designated lots — tickets and towing on the street. No fees.
