About Rathen

The postcard heart of the Elbsandsteingebirge, on the right bank of the Elbe below the Bastei cliffs. Around 400 popular routes on the towers, including some of the most photographed freestanding pinnacles in Europe: the Lokomotive, the Mönch (its summit weather vane shaped like a tin monk is visible for miles), the Talwächter and the Wehltürme. Rock here is notably softer than the rest of Elbsandstein — around the Gamrig it turns very soft and sandy — so the standard Saxon 2-3 day wait after rain is critical to avoid damaging holds. Access from Kurort Rathen village (short ferry across the Elbe from the Bastei side); full Saxon rules apply.
