About The Wasteland (Rifle)

The Wasteland is Rifle's classic power-endurance cave — 'short (50-80 foot) power routes on pocket and tufa-riddled stone similar to the good stuff in Europe' per Mountain Project. Historic significance: Never Believe (5.12d) was the FIRST sport route ever established in Rifle, kicking off the canyon's development in the early 1990s. Many older routes 'have become hyper-polished' from decades of traffic — footholds are 'black with shoe rubber'. The blue-grey Leadville Limestone (Mississippian, ~358 Ma) is porous but the Wasteland's cave geometry sheds water reasonably well — not one of Rifle's wetter walls. Compact canyon means all walls share one weather cell. Rifle Mountain Park is City of Rifle-managed; park entry fee.
