About Scafell Crags (Broad Stand & East Buttress)

Scafell Crags represent the absolute pinnacle of high-altitude British mountain climbing, comprising vast, imposing precipices of volcanic rock set deep in the fells. Facing mostly east and northeast, the cliff receives brief morning sun, but its extreme height of over 800 metres keeps rock cold and causes deep cracks to seep late into summer. The crag is steeped in history, offering serious multi-pitch trad routes spanning from historic Very Diffs up to extreme modern testpieces. Legendary routes like Central Buttress and Botterill's Slab demand solid mountain craft, route-finding skills, and cool nerves. The approach is long and strenuous, taking up to two hours from either Wasdale or Langdale. Rapidly changing mountain weather, extreme exposure, and difficult descents make alpine-style planning mandatory.
