About Shell Pond

Shell Pond is western Maine's premier hard-sport venue — a group of south-west-facing schist cliffs overlooking Shell Pond in the Evans Notch area, just east of North Chatham NH and south of the notch itself, in Stow ME. The two main walls are the Family Wall (an 80-foot steep slab well-suited to top-roping) and the High Meadow Wall (vertical to overhanging), holding around 50 sport routes concentrated in the 5.10–5.12 range. The consensus classics are Captain Dinghy (5.10a) — Mountain Project's most-repeated route here — Pollo Del Mar (5.10d), Science Project (5.11b), Wild Rumpus (5.12a), and Sarlacc (5.12c). The steep angle and south-west aspect keep the rock climbing much longer into wet weather than most Evans Notch venues — Mountain Project notes that some routes can be climbed on rainy days. Approach from NH Route 113 by either Deer Hill Road (3.8 miles, seasonally gated in winter, then a 15–25 minute walk to the cliffs) or Stone House Road (1.1 miles, then ~30 minutes through the field — but more visible to owners; use the Deer Hill approach if you can and be respectful about parking).
