Shining Clough is a remote, mountain gritstone crag set high on the wild northern slopes of Bleaklow overlooking Longdendale. The rock is dark, moody gritstone that ranges from sound face rock to mossy, damp fissures. Facing east at high elevation, the crag receives morning sun but remains cold and damp for much of the year, taking days to dry after rain. Climbing at Shining Clough is an adventurous undertaking featuring classic mountain trad lines, deep chimneys, and wall routes from Severe to E4. Classic lines include Close Ascent and Great Chimney. Reaching the crag entails a serious 45 to 60 minute moorland trek from the Woodhead Reservoir area. Seepage and persistent dampness combined with a long walk-in represent the primary challenge for visiting climbers.
