Shorn Cliff is a long, continuous belt of limestone sea-cliff-style walls hidden within dense woodland above the River Wye near Tintern. The rock character features exceptionally high-quality Carboniferous limestone, packed with crisp horizontal breaks, small wire placements, and continuous vertical wall climbing. Facing west, the cliff receives afternoon sun through the trees, drying steadily under light valley breezes once rain fronts pass through. The venue is world-renowned for sustained, finger-y traditional wall climbs mostly in the VS to upper E-grade range, dominated by benchmark testpieces like Muscles and Bitter Harvest. The approach involves a scenic fifteen-minute woodland walk along the valley trail from Brockweir or Tintern parking. Dense canopy shade helps keep conditions cool in summer but slows drying in early spring.
