About Sron na Ciche

Sron na Ciche is the most popular mountain crag on Skye — a 500-metre-wide, 300-metre-high gabbro face high in Coire Lagan beneath the summit of Sgurr Alasdair. It is the buttress on which the iconic Cioch block sits, and the wider cliff holds classic climbs at every grade from Moderate mountain adventures on the Western Buttress to fierce short testpieces on the Cioch itself and immaculate Extremes on the Eastern Buttress. The rock is rough Cuillin gabbro interspersed with basalt dykes, offering unrivalled friction and clean jam cracks, but the north-west aspect at six hundred metres means the slabs guarding the Amphitheatre approach are slow to dry and remain the crux of many days when wet. Facing broadly north-west, the crag gets late-afternoon sun in summer. Approach from Glenbrittle is around ninety minutes up a well-worn path through Coire Lagan, and complex mountain navigation is essential when cloud comes in.
