About Stone Mountain (NC)
Stone Mountain NC is one of the East's greatest slab and friction domes — a Devonian granite dome (quartz diorite to granodiorite) rising 600+ feet above surrounding terrain in Stone Mountain State Park, Alleghany/Wilkes counties near Elkin, 70 miles north of Charlotte. Signature multi-pitch classics on the south face include The Great Arch (5.5, 3p) — the most obvious route on the dome — and The Pulpit (5.8, 5p). Long runouts of 30+ feet between placements are the norm — this is committing, mental climbing. A 60m rope is essential; two are better for rappels. Winter is prime; summer humidity turns the granite greasy. NC State Parks: registration at the kiosk expected.
