About Storm Mountain

Storm Mountain Picnic Area is Big Cottonwood Canyon's densest climbing zone — 78 routes concentrated within a short walk of the picnic parking, 2.85 miles up the canyon. Rock is Big Cottonwood Formation Precambrian quartzite (850 Ma–1 Ga per Utah Geological Survey), containing some of the oldest tidal rhythmites ever recorded. Quartzite is slippery and hard but offers holds jutting out at all angles. Dries fast — quartzite is near-non-porous so post-rain waits are short. Season March through November in most years.
