About Tieton River (Royal Columns)

Tieton River is a sprawling andesite climbing area strung along twenty miles of the Tieton River drainage, on the semi-arid east slope of the Cascades near Yakima. Over 400 sport and trad routes are split between more than a dozen crags, with Royal Columns as the historic and most popular venue: entry-level cracks, splitter columns, and steep sport in the 5.8–5.12 range including Western Front (5.10a), X-Factor (5.11a), and Peaches (5.9). Sitting in Mount Rainier's rain shadow, Tieton dries within hours of a storm and stays climbable well into autumn — April–June and September–November are prime. Rattlesnakes are common in summer; every crag offers either morning or afternoon shade. Washington Discover Pass required at Oak Creek Wildlife Area parking. Cross the Tieton on the footbridge to reach Royal Columns.
