About Tirpentwys Quarry

Tirpentwys Quarry is a modern, popular sandstone sport climbing venue located near Pontypool in South Wales. The rock character consists of smooth Pennant sandstone forming long vertical walls, clean slab faces, and sharp crimpy horizontal ledges. Facing due south within a sheltered valley bowl, the crag functions as a warm sun trap and dries almost instantly after rain. The venue is predominantly sport-focused, offering high-quality bolted sandstone routes from 5b to 7b+, led by benchmark lines like Tirpentwys Special. The approach involves a ten-minute walk along flat forest tracks from the dedicated woodland parking area. Excellent sun exposure makes it a top choice for dry winter and spring sport climbing.
