About Wainstones

Wainstones represents one of the largest and most famous natural gritstone outcrops in the North York Moors, crowning the skyline above Hasty Bank. The rock provides clean vertical walls, bold arêtes, pinnacle chimneys, and deep cracks with reliable natural friction. Facing northwest at an elevated altitude on the Cleveland Way, the crag stays shaded during morning hours and relies on open hilltop breezes to dry, though dampness can linger in internal crevices. The grade spectrum is broad, offering quality traditional climbing across the full spectrum alongside popular bouldering, featured in famous lines like The Sphinx and Central Pillar. The approach requires a steady fifteen-to-twenty-minute uphill hike along the Cleveland Way national trail from the Clay Bank car park. The primary factor when planning a visit is wind exposure; the crag sits on a prominent ridge where biting winds can make conditions significantly colder than ambient valley temperatures.
