About Washington Pass (Liberty Bell)
Washington Pass is North Cascades alpine climbing at its most accessible — Liberty Bell, Concord Tower, Lexington Tower, and the Early Winter Spires all rise directly from Highway 20 at 1,400 metres in the heart of the range. The alpine granite is clean, featured, and cold; the Beckey Route on Liberty Bell (5.6) is one of the state's classic moderates, the aid line Liberty Crack (IV 5.10c C1) is a Cascade rite of passage, and the South Arete of South Early Winter Spire (5.4) makes a friendly first alpine outing. Highway 20 typically closes with the first heavy November snow and reopens in mid- to late May — check the WSDOT North Cascades Highway status each year. July through September is the reliable climbing window; snow can linger into July on shaded routes.
