About Willersley Castle Crag

Willersley Castle Crag is a secluded, wooded limestone cliff situated above the River Derwent opposite Matlock Bath. The rock quality is sound, featured limestone with deep cracks, pockets, and bold vertical faces set within a mature canopy. Facing west, the crag receives afternoon sunlight through the trees, though dense foliage and river proximity mean lower sectors take longer to dry after rain. The venue offers a fine balance of traditional routes and sport climbs, catering largely to intermediate climbers with grades from Severe to E4. Classic lines like Witches' Brew and Gorilla are firm favorites. Access takes five minutes along private estate paths from the Cromford car parks. Climbers must respect estate access arrangements and keep noise low near the hotel grounds.
