About Wright's Rock (Churnet)

Wright's Rock is a secluded soft sandstone outcrop hidden within the dense woodland of the Churnet Valley. The rock is fine-grained, soft Staffordshire sandstone that requires delicate treatment and dry conditions to prevent damage. Facing south, it catches filtered sunlight through the tree canopy, but heavy forest enclosure means drying times are slow and seepage is high after rainfall. The climbing style consists of short, technical wall climbs and bouldering problems on gentle overhangs and breaks. Reaching the crag involves a fifteen-minute walk along woodland tracks from local valley laybys. The single most important rule is never to climb on the soft sandstone when the rock is damp, as holds can snap easily.
