  • Good friction range for gritstone
Almscliff Crag is a legendary gritstone outcrop dominating a high ridge above Wharfedale, widely regarded as the cradle of Yorkshire trad climbing. The rock is coarse, exceptionally sound gritstone featuring rounded mantels, crisp crimps, geometric cracks, and friction slabs. Angled toward all compass directions around its summit blocks and buttresses, sun or shelter can always be found, and high exposure ensures immediate drying after rain. The climbing style spans highball bouldering, bold micro-routes, and famous trad testpieces from Diff to E7. Historic classics like Demon Wall and Great Flake represent essential British climbing milestones. Access takes five minutes via established paths from the roadside parking layby. Biting winds on this prominent summit require warm layers in cold weather.
