About Bowfell Buttress

Bowfell Buttress is a striking triangular mass of Borrowdale volcanic rock high on the north face of Bowfell, visible across Mickleden from the Old Dungeon Ghyll. The north aspect and altitude above 750m mean the crag stays cold and slow to dry, needing a real summer dry spell to come into full condition. Access is via The Band from ODG then a rising traverse ('Climbers' Traverse') to the base, roughly two hours. Nearby is the famous Great Slab, an angled sheet of rock that is treacherous when wet.
